Nine Matador Water Polo Players Honored For Their Academic Success

 Northridge, Calif. – Not only did Cal State Northridge water polo enjoy another winning season in 2011, nine Matador players also enjoyed success in the classroom.

   Melissa Doll, Jessica Goforth, Alyssa Goldie, Dana Harvey, Molly Henehan, Leah Janke, Lindsy Nelson, Heidi Pettinger and Bethany Scamara were named to the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-Academic List on Monday.

   Doll earned "Outstanding" status for her cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) that averaged between 4.00 – 3.71.

   Goforth and Henehan earned "Superior" honors for their GPA's, which were between the 3.70 – 3.41 range.

   Goldie, Harvey, Janke, Nelson, Pettinger and Scamara all earned "Excellent" status for GPA's between 3.40 and 3.20.

   As a team, Cal State Northridge posted a GPA of 3.10 that ranked in the Top 25 among college and universities in the country.

#4 Melissa Doll, 5-9, Attacker, Freshman, Souderton, Pa.

Voted CSUN's Co-Rookie of the Year … The freshman scored 34 goals this year, fifth-best on the team and 19-th best in the league … Scored a season-high two goals in eight games … Collected 31 steals (#3 on the team) and 27 assists (#5 on the team) … Named All-Academic by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC).

#18 Jessica Goforth, 6-1, Defender, RS Senior, Visalia, Ca.

Voted CSUN's Coaches Award … Named All-Academic by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) for a second straight year … Also named Big West Academic All-Conference for a second straight season … Enjoyed her best season with 25 goals (#7 on the team), 36 steals (#2 on the team) and 22 assists (#8 on the team) … Scored a career-high three goals in the 14-13 victory over UC Davis (4/2/11).

#7 Alyssa Goldie, 5-9, Attacker, Junior, Riverside, Ca.

Named All-Academic by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) for a third straight season … A Big West All-Academic selection for a second straight season … Scored six goals along with ten steals and five assists … Scored a career-high two goals against Concordia (2/3/11).

#1 Dana Harvey, 5-8, Goalkeeper, Junior, Auckland, New Zealand

Named All-Academic by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) … Voted CSUN's Red Cape Award … Played in 23 games with 202 saves (9.85 spg, #3 in the BWC) … Tallied ten or more saves in nine games including a season-high 21 saves against Indiana (1/22/11) … Her 202 saves this year are seventh-best for a single season in school history, and fifth-best in career history … Named Big West Water Polo Tri-Player of the Week for her 17 saves in CSUN's 8-7 victory over UC Santa Barbara (4/9/11).

#11 Molly Henehan, 5-10, Center, Corona, Ca.

Tallied six goals, six steals and four assists in a reserve role … Named All-Academic by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC).

#6 Leah Janke, 5-7, Attacker, Sophomore, Wildomar, Ca.

Voted CSUN's Most Improved Award … Named All-Academic by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) … Also named Big West All-Academic … Tallied 28 goals (#6 on the team) along with 47 assists (#3 on the team) … Scored a season-high four goals in the 11-9 victory over Pacific (4/3/11).

#5 Lindsy Nelson, 5-9, Attacker, Freshman, Murray, Ut.

Named All-Academic by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) … Voted CSUN's Co-Rookie of the Year … The freshman was among the team's leading scorers 41 goals (#4 on the team, #14 in the Big West Conference) … Scored at least two goals in eleven games including a season-high five goals against Cal State Bakersfield (2/19/11) … Tops on the team in assists (49) … Her 49 assists are sixth-best for a single season in school history … Also has 24 steals.

#19 Heidi Pettinger, 5-9, Attacker, Junior, Petaluma, Ca.

Named honorable mention All-Big West Conference … Voted CSUN's MVP Defensive Player … Named All-Academic by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) for a second straight year … Also named Big West All-Academic for a second straight season … The team's #2 scorer with 62 goals (#2 in the Big West Conference), second-best in the Big West Conference and fifth-best for a single season in school history … Scored at least one goal in 29 of the team's 37 games … Scored two or more goals in 18 games including a career-high five goals in the 10-9 victory over Cal State San Bernardino (4/3/11) … Scored four goals in three games … Has scored 103 career goals (12 goals in 2009, 29 goals in 2010, 62 goals in 2011), ninth-best in school history … Tops on the team in field blocks (20), steals (42) and assists (51, #5 for a single season) ... Earlier this year gained Big West Player of the Week for her eleven goals, four assists, two steals, one field block and eleven ejections drawn in wins over UC Davis (14-13, 4/2/11), Pacific (11-9, 4/3/11) and Cal State San Bernardino (10-9, 4/3/11) … Her 99 career steals and 86 career assists are tenth-best in school history.

#2 Bethany Scamara, 5-4, Driver, Senior, Fontana, Ca.
