Matadors Drop Season Opener in Four Sets to Utah Valley

TUCSON, Ariz. - Natalie Allen and Casey Hinger combined for 25 kills but Cal State Northridge dropped its 2012 season opener in four sets to Utah Valley at the Wildcat Classic at McKale Center.

The Matadors (0-1) won the opening set 25-19 while out-hitting the Wolverines .500-.188. Northridge however did not come close to replicating that hitting prowess over the final three sets, falling 25-21, 25-18, 26-24. CSUN hit .158 in set two, .074 in set three and .116 in the final frame.

Allen put down a team-high 14 kills while hitting .306 in a team-high 36 swings. She also added 11 digs for her first double-double of 2012 and 21st of her career. Hinger also hit well checking in at .304 with 11 kills and four errors in 23 attacks. The sophomore from Fullerton also posted a match-high five blocks.

Matador setter Sydney Gedryn handed out 40 assists to go with 11 digs and seven kills. Gedryn led Northridge to a .211 hitting clip with 50 kills in 142 attacks. Conversely, Utah Valley hit .173 with 50 kills in 150 swings. The Matadors did not help themselves at the service line committing 12 service errors while being aced seven times by the Wolverines. Cindy Ortiz led Northridge with 17 digs as the Matadors also out-dug Utah Valley 61-57.

Cal State Northridge plays match two of the Wildcat Classic this evening at 7 p.m. as the Matadors take on the host Arizona Wildcats (1-0), a straight set winner over Evansville earlier in the day.
