DES MOINES, Iowa - In difficult weather conditions at Drake University, senior Sherrina Lofton performed well on Thursday and is in sixth-place after four events of the Heptathlon at the NCAA Championships.
Lofton opened the competition with a time of 14.31 in the 100 meter hurdles to earn 935 points. She placed second in her heat and 17th overall. Lofton's season and career-best was 14.06 in the multi-event portion of the Big West Championships.
"Sherrina's time was good considering the conditions," said assistant coach Avery Anderson.
In the high jump, which was moved indoors due to the weather, Lofton cleared the bar on her first attempt at 5-5.25 (1.66) before missing all three attempts at 5-6.50. She placed 12th in the event to add 806 points to her total.
Next it was on to the shot put and Lofton again finished among the top-12 as she posted a season-best of 37-10 (11.53) on her second throw. Her mark was good for 630 points as the first day of competition wrapped up with the 200 meters.
It was the final event of the day that Lofton shined. She came in with a season-best of 24.11 and finished just .02 off that time. By running 24.13, Lofton was second and added 968 points to her day one total of 3,339.
"Sherrina is in good position after day one," said Anderson. "We just have to do a good job of managing how to compete against the elements as well as the competition in each event."
Friday's final three events include the Long Jump, Javlin and 800 meters.
