Matadors Open 2011 Indoor Season at UW Invitational in Seattle

Cal State Northridge opens up the 2011 indoor track & field season this weekend as the Matador men and women travel to the Pacific Northwest to compete at the UW Invitational at Washington's Dempsey Indoor.

Northridge's first indoor meet of 2011 gets underway Friday at 3 p.m. with the women's 60 meter hurdles as part of the Pentathlon. The first field event on Friday is the women's high jump, also part of the Pentathlon. Running events get underway at 8 a.m. on Saturday with two heats of the women's 3,000 meters. The meet wraps up Saturday evening with four heats of the men's 4x400 relay at 6:30 p.m.

Several Matadors are set to make their debuts this weekend while the Matadors will also welcome back a pair of standouts who redshirted the 2010 season.

Sherrina Lofton, the 2008 Big West Women's Athlete of the Year, will make her first appearance since the 2009 outdoor season as will De'Shawn Waters, the Big West champion in the 100 and 200 meters in 2009. Lofton will compete in the 60 meters and Pentathlon while Waters will run the 60 and 200 meters.

Making their Northridge debut on the women's side this weekebd are: Alisa Jenkins (60 hurdles, Pentathlon), Jordan Dufault (60 hurdles, high jump, long jump), Ashley Frazier (60 hurdles, 400 meters), Olympia Jewitt (triple jump, Pentathlon) and Shane Mullany-Banks (60 hurdles).

For the men, Sean Alfino (60 meters), Jose Aviles (shot put), Noah Blue (60 hurdles), Trevor Campbell (200, 400 meters), Kevin Finley (Heptathlon), Carl Horsley (60, 400 meters), Jerrid Lews (800 meters), Brandon Linton (60 meters), Tawaun Lucas (60 meters), Darquis Rucker (60, 200 meters), Jory Rucker (60 meters, long jump), Donovan Toban (long jump, triple jump, Heptathlon), Tyler Woodard (pole vault), Bobby Workman (400 meters) are all schedule to make their Matador debut.

With the California State High School Indoor Qualifier fast approaching, Northridge has set attendance records at its first three All Comers Meets of the 2011 season. With three meets already in the books, Matador Track & Field has attracted 1,623 competitors and spectators to the Matador Track Complex. The attendance at each meet has grown each week culminating in last Saturday's (Jan. 22) record of 693 participants and fans.

The All Comers Meet on Feb. 5 will be the California State High School Indoor Qualifier and will feature a different time schedule than is the norm at a typical All Comers Meet. A time schedule for the meet is posted under the Track Quick Links.
