NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team (10-7) defeated Columbia 5-2 Friday afternoon in a non-conference dual match at Matador Tennis Complex. CSUN swept the doubles point and took the top four singles matches in toppling the Lions.
With the win, Northridge improved to 7-3 at home in dual matches. The Matadors have also put together a nice run, having now won six of their past eight dual matches.
Friday, Northridge opened the match by sweeping the three doubles contests. The No. 1 doubles team of Maria Pistalu and Brooke Doane cruised to an 8-1 victory and the No. 2 doubles team of Sabrina Man-Son-Hing and Jennifer Sher duplicated the effort. CSUN's third doubles team, Anna Yang and Lorraine Cheung, took an 8-7 (4) decision at the third match.
Doane and Pistalu are now 2-1 on the season, Man-Son-Hing and Sher are a perfect 3-0 and the match represented Yang and Cheung's first time playing together this season.
In singles action, the Matadors took three of the top four draws in straight sets. Sher improved to 11-3 on the season after her opponent retired midway through the second set. Doane picked up her second-straight win to give her a 5-10 season mark with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the second draw. Finally, Cheung played for the first time this season at the fourth draw and cruised to a 6-3, 6-4 decision.
The other Matador to win in singles was Pistalu, who rallied from a set down to win the third draw: 5-7, 7-5 10-6. The Lions took the fifth and sixth draws Friday. Man-Son-Hing lost in straight sets at No. 5 and Yang also fell in straight sets in the No. 6 match.
CSUN's next opponent also hails from the Ivy League, Dartmouth. The Matadors and Big Green take to the hard courts on Saturday, Mar. 19 for a 12:30 p.m.match at the Matador Tennis Complex.
