Matador Tennis Drops Tough 4-3 Decision to UC Santa Barbara

March 12, 2011

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team (8-7, 1-4 Big West) lost a tough 4-3 decision to UC Santa Barbara in a Big West Conference match Saturday afternoon. The Matadors swept the doubles point, but dropped four singles matches to the Gauchos.

Northridge jumped out to an early lead behind some stellar doubles play. Head coach Gary Victory juggled CSUN's line-up and it paid dividends. Brooke Doane played with Maria Pistalu at No. 1 and the pair cruised to an 8-2 victory.

At No. 2, Jennifer Sher and Sabrina Man-Son-Hing duplicated Doane and Pistalu's effort with an 8-2 victory. Finally, Nigora Sirojiddinova and Anna Yang won an 8-4 decision at the third draw.

However, singles play started out roughly for the Matadors. Senior Nina Jaworowski had to retire from her No. 3 match. After Sher posted a straight-set victory at the second draw, the Gauchos took the top draw in a three-set battle between Natalie Lozano and Doane.

The Matadors responded with Pistalu's point at No. 5, as the sophomore took a two-set victory in which both frames went to a tiebreaker. However, UCSB won the final two matches with the decisive point coming in a three-set victory at the fourth draw.

Northridge returns to action Tuesday, Mar. 15 with a 2 p.m. non-conference match against Texas State.
