Cal State Northridge women's tennis seniors Maria Pistalu, Anna Yang and Sabrina Man-Son-Hing and junior Lorraine Cheung all received 2013 All-Big West Women's Tennis awards as voted upon by the league's head coaches, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Pistalu took home an All-Big West Singles Second Team award while the doubles team of Man-Son-Hing and Yang earned All-Big West Doubles First Team and the team of Pistalu and Cheung received Honorable Mention honors.
"All four of the young women honored today went a long way towards carrying us to a fifth-place finish in this league," CSUN head coach Gary Victor said. "This projected as a tougher year for us, but I am so proud of the way they raised their play all season. Maria and Anna had fantastic singles seasons and our doubles teams were outstanding all year."
Playing primarily at the top draw for CSUN, Pistalu posted an 8-11 overall record and 5-4 mark in Big West play in singles action. She picked up notable victories over Cal State Fullerton, Cal Poly, Hawai'i, New Mexico State and Eastern Michigan. Pistalu ended her singles career at CSUN with an overall record of 43-31.
In doubles action, Yang and Man-Son-Hing finished the year with a 14-6 overall record and 5-4 mark in conference competition. The duo started out a sparkling 13-0 on the season and produced notable wins over Cal State Fullerton, UC Santa Barbara twice, Pacific, New Mexico, UC Davis and Iowa.
The First Team award marked the second such award for both Yang and Man-Son-Hing. For her career, Yang earned All-Big West Doubles honors three times and finished with a career record of 52-29 (.650). Man-Son-Hing finished her three seasons at CSUN with a doubles record of 45-21 (.682).
Finally, the Matadors' No. 2 doubles team of Pistalu and Cheung earned All-Big West Doubles Honorable Mention. The tandem went 13-8 overall on the year and 5-4 against league opponents. They recorded impressive wins over UC Santa Barbara twice, New Mexico State, Pacific, UC Davis and Cal Poly.
This was the second time that Pistalu earned All-Big West Doubles Honorable Mention. She finished her CSUN career with a doubles record of 52-23 (.693). This is the first All-Big West award for Cheung and she enters her senior season with a career doubles mark of 29-18.
