No. 66 Matadors Celebrate Superbowl Sunday with 6-1 Win over Titans

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team (2-2, 1-0 Big West) defeated Cal State Fullerton 6-1 in a Big West Conference match in Fullerton, Calif. on Sunday, Feb. 5. The 66th-ranked Matadors swept the doubles point and then picked up four straight-set victories in singles competition as they evened their season record. 

Having entered the latest ITA rankings, CSUN quickly showed why with its performance in doubles play. The Matadors swept the three matches and lost only five games out of 29 played. Jennifer Sher and Sabrina Man-Son-Hing won their top draw 8-4 while Maria Pistalu and Lorraine Cheung posted an 8-1 win in their third-seeded match.

Finally, Nigora Sirojiddinova and Anna Yang did not lose a game in their second-seeded draw and won 8-0. 

In singles, Sher evened her season record with a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the top singles match. Sirojiddinova also won in straight sets in the No. 2 draw, posting a 6-3, 6-3 victory. 

The Matadors also won the fifth and sixth singles matches in straight sets. Yang won 6-0 and 6-2 in the No. 5 match and Cheung reversed the scores but had the same result (6-2, 6-0) in the No. 6 match. 

Two singles contests went to a decisive third set. Pistalu picked up a 6-4, 1-6 and 10-8 victory in the fourth draw. The Titans only point of the match came in the No. 3 singles contest, where Man-Son-Hing lost 7-6 (5), 4-6 and 10-8. 

The No. 66 Cal State Northridge women's tennis team returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 11 with its home opener against Gonzaga. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
