NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Offered by CSUN and "Friends of Ramon", the annual Ramon Calderon Cup volleyball tournament will be a fundraiser for the Matador Sand Volleyball program and will take place at Zuma Beach on May 31, 2014.
The CSUN women's volleyball team entered the new NCAA Sand Volleyball Emerging Sports Program in Spring 2014, without a sand court, on a campus located 30 miles from the nearest beach. Practicing indoors and traveling to a beach when possible, our women made a valiant showing this year competing with the top-ranked programs in the country, many located in Southern California.
The goal of the Matador women's volleyball program is to enhance the experience of both the student-athletes and the fans, by putting an outstanding product on the sand court and in the classroom.
"Friends of Ramon" runs an annual tournament to raise funds for a deserving charity selected in Ramon's name. Our success is built by running a top flight event where hundreds of players, aged 15 to 74, play in a competitive and fun environment. Our mission is to fund the growth and education of the sport our dear friend Ramon dearly loved. Our success is shown in our last tournament, where we raised 60% more than our goal. Our participants included Jason Olive, Olympian and three-time UCLA All-American Paul Nihipali and 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist Eric Fonoimoana whose "Dig 4 Kids" charity was our 2013 beneficiary.
"Friends of Ramon" are an informal organization of enthusiastic beach volleyball players from Malibu and the San Fernando Valley, Simi and Conejo valleys who operate in the spirit of long-time CSUN volleyball fan Ramon Calderon and his love for beach volleyball, athletic experience, sportsmanship and an open invitation to all. We operate under "First Last game," an expression Ramon used at the end of a day of volleyball.
