CSUN Drops First Two at Beach Collegiate Challenge

CHULA VISTA, Calif. - Cal State Northridge opened the 2014 USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge Friday with the Matadors falling 4-1 to Grand Canyon. Competition continued Saturday morning as CSU Bakersfield topped CSUN 4-1.

The tournament, which runs through Sunday, features five teams (the Matadors, CSU Bakersfield, Pepperdine, Hawai'i and Grand Canyon) in a dual and single elimination format.

CSUN opened play Friday against Grand Canyon and won one of the five matches with Marissa Boyd and Casey Hinger coming away with a 21-19, 20-22, 13-9 victory.

In other matches, the Grand Canyon duo of Phelps/Dallman defeated Kelcie Randazzo/Sydney Gedryn 21-15, 21-11; Dugan/Glennie defeated Natalie Allen/Mahina Haina 21-13, 21-11; Jenkins/Dickerson defeated Steffi Miller/Julie Haake 21-10, 21-19; Forsythe/Grant defeated Alia Casino/Stephanie Serna 21-16, 21-15. Sam Kaul/Brooke Dawson won the No. 6 match 22-20, 21-16 over the GCU duo of Dombroski/Stonerook. In the No. 6 match, Cieana Stinson/Casino defeated Riley/Fowler in three sets (19-21, 21-17, 15-8).

Boyd and Hinger also won their Saturday match against CSU Bakersfield 21-13, 21-13 over the team of Bowen/Perrens. The win was the lone one for CSUN in the five against the Roadrunners.

Randazzo/Gedryn fell to O'Hagen/Araujo 21-11, 22-20; Allen/Haina lost to Guitare/Alvidrez 21-0, 22-20; Miller/Haake fell to Little/Bartsch 21-16, 21-14 and Kaul/Dawson dropped a 21-13, 21-12 decision to Haynes/Youngblood.

Cal State Northridge meets Hawai'i at noon in its final dual match.
