NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---
Junior Brianna Elder won her 17th game of the season by tossing a complete game shutout as the Cal State Northridge softball team (25-14, 3-3 Big West) defeated UC Davis 4-0 Sunday afternoon. At the plate, senior Leann Lopez blasted her first home run of the season and Katie Hooper had two hits as the Matadors captured their first series against the Aggies since 2009.
On a windy and sunny day in the San Fernando Valley, Elder (17-6) provided CSUN with yet another strong performance. She allowed only four hits and two walks and posted her 15th complete game and second shutout of the season. She owns a 1.89 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 140.2 innings on the season.
After Elder worked around an Aggies' threat in the first, the Matadors answered with a run in the bottom of the first. With two outs, Hooper and Madison Fleming singled and Taylor Nate drew a walk to load the bases. Ariana Wassmer then drew a bases loaded walk to give CSUN the early advantage.
In the third, CSUN doubled its lead. Hooper led off the inning with a single and Aliyah Ricks pinch ran for her at first base. Fleming mover Ricks to second with one of her two sacrifice bunts in the game. Ricks stole third and in the next at-bat, scored on a throwing error by the UC Davis first baseman.
In the fourth, Lopez blasted a shot that cleared the left field fence. The home run was the 15th for the Matadors this season and the second of Lopez's career.
In the fifth, Taylor Glover doubled to right-center to start the frame. She moved to third on a passed ball and came around to score on a throwing error. She has scored a team-high 29 runs this season.
Kaitlin Toerner had a base hit and a stolen base in the victory. CSUN won two of three games against the Aggies at home for the first time since the 2008 season. The win also improved CSUN's home record to 14-3 on the season.
The Matadors return to action Wednesday, April 9 with a doubleheader at Bakersfield. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. CSUN returns to Big West action on Saturday, April 12 with a doubleheader against UC Santa Barbara starting at noon.
