The Cal State Northridge softball team (15-23, 1-5 Big West) defeated UC Davis 8-1 Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game Big West Conference series at LaRue Field. Maylynn Mitchell went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate and Brianna Elderpicked up her first win of the season in the circle as the Matadors snapped a six-game skid overall and seven-game streak against the Aggies.
Mitchell set a career high with her four base hits and also scored two runs. Jennifer Tyler, Korinne Randazzo and Sydney House all had two hits in the victory. In all, six of the nine Matador starters recorded a hit in the victory.
Randazzp recorded her team-leading 14th steal of the season. Mitchell and Tiffini Luceroeach had stolen bases as well and Lucero recorded her fourth sac bunt of the year.
In the circle, Elder (1-2) gave up just one unearned run to go with three strikeouts. She worked around three Matador errors and seven UC Davis hits to earn her second career victory. For the game, UC Davis stranded 10 runners on base.
Leading 2-1 after five innings, CSUN scored six runs in the top of the sixth to blow the game open. A pair of UC Davis errors helped extend the Matador inning and Mikayla Thielges cleared the bases with a 3-run double, her team-leading 12th of the season.
In fact, CSUN sent 12 batters to the plate in the sixth. Maylynn Mitchell had two singles and Jennifer Tyler and Sydney House each had an RBI single in the frame.
The Matadors return to action with a single game at Long Beach State on Wednesday, April 10 at 3 p.m. Next weekend, CSUN hosts Cal Poly in a three-game series at Matador Diamond. The Matadors and Mustangs will play a doubleheader on April 13 followed by a single game on April 14. First pitch for both days is slated for noon.
