NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---
The Cal State Northridge softball team (14-21, 0-3 Big West) lost 9-3 to No. 20 Hawai'i Sunday afternoon in the final contest of a three-game Big West Conference series at Matador Diamond. A six-run fourth for Hawai'i broke open as the Rainbow Wahine posted the series sweep.
On offense for CSUN, Maylynn Mitchell finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and her fourth double of the season. Fellow freshman Ariana Wassmer added a 2-for-3 performance and senior Korinne Randazzo extended her team-best hitting streak to seven games.
However, Hawai'i had too much offense Sunday. The Rainbow Wahine scored a run in the first without getting a hit and then put together six runs in the fourth. The inning turned sour for CSUN on an interesting play.
With one out in the inning, the Matadors thought they had gotten out of the inning with a line-out double play to shortstop. However, the umpires ruled that Mitchell had trapped the ball, not caught it, and the play was just a 6-3 putout.
After that play, Hawai'i added five more runs in the inning to take a 7-0 lead. Mia Pagano (7-8) took the loss for the Matadors, going 3.2 innings with five hits and six earned runs. Alexa Limon, Shelly Tait and Brianna Elder also saw time in the circle Saturday.
CSUN kept at it and would not allow the Rainbow Wahine to post a mercy-rule victory. Northridge scored a run in the bottom of the fifth on a wild play. Randazzo was on second after a two-out single and an illegal pitch.
Madalyne Handy swung at strike three, but the pitch went behind the catcher allowing her to reach safely while Randazzo wheeled all the way home.
After Hawai'i added two more runs in the sixth to threaten a shortened game, CSUN responded with a run. Mitchell doubled to right center and scored on a single by Tiffini Lucero.
Finally, in the seventh, Pagano led off the inning with a double and then came around to score after a sac bunt by Randazzo resulted in a throwing error.
CSUN has a week off before returning to action with a road series at UC Davis. The Matadors and Aggies will play a doubleheader on April 6 and a single game on April 7.
