Matadors Face Bulldogs in Wednesday Doubleheader

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---

The Cal State Northridge softball team (1-4) plays Fresno State in a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Bulldog Diamond. CSUN will look to keep the momentum going after defeating Western Michigan 6-1 in its final game at the Kajikawa Classic.

Facing a difficult schedule that featured three nationally ranked opponents and two participants in the 2012 Women's College World Series, the Matadors showed promise during their weekend in Arizona.

At the plate, CSUN drew 21 walks and had three batters hit by a pitch to finish with a .344 team on-base percentage.  Three Matadors (Sydney House, Mia Pagano and Korinne Randazzo) all finished with three RBIs on the weekend and Pagano, Crystal Maas and Mikayla Thielges all blasted home runs.

In the circle, senior Shelly Tait finished the weekend with a 2.90 ERA after tossing 6+ strong innings in the win over Western Michigan. Sophomore Jennifer Tyler tossed 4+ innings of one-hit softball against Arizona State.

The Matadors and Bulldogs have a long history on the diamond. Fresno State leads the all-time series 35-20 and holds a 15-7 advantage against Northridge at their home field. CSUN won the last meeting in the contest, 8-5, in Santee, Calif., during the 2012 campaign.

Through five games and including wins over Big West rivals UC Riverside and UC Davis, Brenna Moore is hitting an even .400 with a triple and four RBIs. In the circle, Jillian Compton has started four games already and carries a 3-1 record with a 1.75 ERA and 13 strikeouts into Wednesday's games.

Trisha Ford is in her first season as the head coach at Fresno State, replacing the legendary Margie Wright who stepped down after 27 seasons at the helm.

Following the two games Wednesday, CSUN heads further north to compete in the Stanford Nike Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. At the event, the Matadors will face the host and 22nd-ranked Cardinal twice, CSU Bakersfield twice and Santa Clara once.
