The Cal State Northridge women's soccer team was picked fifth in the 2010 Big West Women's Soccer Preseason Coaches poll, the league office announced Thursday. The Matadors received 45 points in the survey of the league's coaches to earn the fifth-place preseason designation for the second-straight season.

"I think the conference will have another solid season and I look forward to how it all turns out," CSUN head coach Keith West said.

A year ago the Matadors received 33 points in the preseason poll, but then posted a 6-2 mark against league opponents to finish in second place. CSUN returns five all-league players from that 2009 squad: Farryn Townley, Cynthia Jacobo, Sonia Espitia, Brielle Slepicoff and Heidi Farran. West was also named the 2009 Big West Coach of the Year.

UC Santa Barbara received the preseason favorite designation from the coaches, picking up four first-place votes and 75 points overall. Cal Poly edged UC Irvine by one point, 62-61, to place second and third, respectively. Both the Mustangs and Anteaters picked up two first place votes.

The final team to earn a first-place vote was Pacific, who was picked fourth with 58 points. Long Beach State checked in at sixth with 44 points, one behind CSUN. Cal State Fullerton was picked seventh with 34 points, UC Riverside was eighth with 15 and UC Davis was ninth with 13 points.

The Matadors kick off the 2010 season with a non-league game at the Gauchos' Harder Stadium on Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. Two days later, CSUN debuts its new lights at Matador Soccer Field in a 7 p.m. match against Portland.

Among the league opponents, Northridge will host UC Davis (Oct. 1, 7 p.m.), Pacific (Oct. 3, 1 p.m.), UC Riverside (Oct. 17, 6 p.m.) and Cal State Fullerton (Oct. 28, 7 p.m.).

The Matadors will travel to face UC Santa Barbara (Oct. 8, 7 p.m.), Cal Poly (Oct. 10, 1 p.m.), UC Irvine (Oct. 15, 6 p.m.) and Long Beach State (Oct. 24, 1 p.m.).
