UC Riverside Defeats Northridge, 1-0
Oct. 30, 2008
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's soccer team lost to UC Riverside, 1-0, Thursday afternoon at Matador Soccer Field. The defeat drops the Matadors to 7-9-2 overall and 2-4-1 in the Big West Conference while the Highlanders improve to 7-10-2 and 2-5-1 in league play.
The game's only goal came in the waning moments of the contest. Following a scrum near the center of the pitch, UCR's Tessa Lennala collected the ball and turned and fired on net, connecting on a 35-yard strike for her 10th goal of the season.
In net, sophomore Leah Elliott finished with two saves in the contest, both of which came in the second half. She now has a 7-9-2 record for the season with 106 saves, a 1.33 goals-against-average and a .809 save percentage.
Despite the loss, CSUN still remains in contention for a spot in the Big West playoffs, though they will need some help. The Matadors have seven points in the league with one game left to play. UC Irvine, which has eight points currently, has two games remaining, and Pacific, which has 10 points, has a single game left.
To make the playoffs, the Matadors must defeat Cal State Fullerton on Sunday and hope UC Irvine either loses both matches or draws in one and loses the other combined with Pacific dropping their match against UC Davis on Sunday.
Sunday marks CSUN's final regular season game of the season, a 2 p.m. match against Cal State Fullerton at Matador Soccer Field. The game will also feature a pre-game ceremony for the Matadors' four seniors: Nalena Betancourt, Tinamarie Lutizetti, Kristal Phillips and Tryna Tafoya.
