NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---
Freshman Breanna McCallum scored the game's only goal in the 31st minute to lift the Cal State Northridge women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Long Beach State Friday evening in a Big West Conference match at Matador Soccer Field. Sophomore Cynthia Tafoya made three saves in net for CSUN, Brittanie Sakajian and Amanda Smith provided assists and the Matadors recorded their second-straight 1-0 victory over the 49ers.
Entering the match still with a mathematical chance to qualify for the Big West Tournament, the Matadors secured a crucial three points Friday. In a wild sequence in front of net, Smith and Sakajian teamed to loop the ball over the LBSU goalkeeper and McCallum headed home her third goal of the season.
For Smith, the assist was her third of the season and 10th of her career. She now ranks tied for sixth in school history with the 10 assists. The assist was Sakajian's first of the year.
In net, Tafoya made three saves to record her second shutout of the season. Her biggest stop of the night came in the 72nd minute on a diving save off the foot of Celeste Dominguez. Her counterpart, Kaci McCain, had four saves in defeat.
Both teams managed 14 shots for the contest and Long Beach State held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks. CSUN had 11 fouls to nine for LBSU and both the Long Beach State bench and Chloe McDaniel saw the yellow card. In the 89th minute, Long Beach State's Taylor Nelson received a red card.
The goal ended a prolonged scoreless streak for the Matadors and improved the team's record to 24-16 in 1-0 contests since the start of the 2009 season. The win also improved Northridge's record at Matador Soccer Field to 23-13-3 since the installation of lights prior to the 2010 season.
The Matadors return to action Sunday, Oct. 27 with their final home match of the season. CSUN faces UC Irvine at 6 p.m. and the team will honor its four seniors (Smith, McDaniel, Wendy Warner and Haley Chee) prior to the start of the contest.
