CSUN Falls 1-0 to UC Santa Barbara

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---

The Cal State Northridge women's soccer team (5-9-1, 0-3-1 BWC) lost 1-0 to UC Santa Barbara Sunday afternoon in a Big West Conference match at Matador Soccer Field. A Gaucho goal in the 14th minute of action proved decisive as the Matadors lost to UCSB for the first time since 2010.

Although both teams finished with 10 shots, the Matadors had trouble generating dangerous offensive chances for the second-straight match. Haley Chee and Brittanie Sakajian each had a shot on goal, but neither attempt gave UCSB's Beth Ritter much difficulty.

The game's only goal came in the 14th minute on a hectic sequence. UCSB's Angelisa Cortez forced a CSUN turnover and broke in on goal. Her shot was saved by an on-rushing Cynthia Tafoya, but the carrom found the foot of Allie Ariniello. She then took a touch and put the ball into an open net.

Tafoya finished with two saves in the contest, but the loss dropped her record to 5-6-1 on the season. Both teams had five corner kicks and UCSB had 10 fouls to six for CSUN. Sophomore Lyndsey Preston saw the yellow card in the 90th minute of action.

The loss marked CSUN's third shutout defeat at home in its last four contests at Matador Soccer Field. With one point through its first four Big West matches, Northridge will have to string together a strong finish to qualify for a fourth-straight Big West Tournament.

Next week, CSUN hits the road for its only contest. On Oct. 20, the Matadors will play at UC Davis in a 1 p.m. contest.
