Northridge Defeated 3-1 at San Diego

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---

Despite a goal from freshman Breanna McCallum, the Cal State Northridge women's soccer team (0-4) lost 3-1 to San Diego Sunday afternoon in a non-conference contest at Torero Stadium. McCallum tied the match midway through the first half on a cross from Amanda Smith, but two second-half tallies from USD's Emily Dillon pushed the Toreros to the victory.

Playing the final of four-straight road matches to start the 2013 season, the Matadors trailed early Sunday after a goal by Michaela Dooley in the sixth minute of action. However, they would go into halftime level after McCallum one-timed a cross from Smith in the 23rd minute of action.

The goal was the first of McCallum's career and Smith's eighth career assist.

The two teams would remain deadlocked at 1-1 for a large portion of the second half. It was not until the 77th minute of action that USD's Emily Dillon broke the tie with a goal. She then added a second score in the 85th minute to seal the victory for USD.

In all, CSUN out-shot San Diego 12-9 for the contest. Both teams finished with four saves and USD held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. There were no cautions in the contest and the teams combined for just 10 fouls.

In net, Cynthia Tafoya made her first career start for Northridge and had four saves. San Diego's Michelle Craft made four saves to earn the victory.

CSUN returns to action next Friday (Sept. 7) with their 2013 home opener. The Matadors and Cougars are slated for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff as the match will follow a CSUN-San Diego men's soccer contest starting at 5 p.m. There will also be a Matador Fan Fest that day, running from 4-7 p.m., on the adjoining Intramural Fields next to Matador Soccer Field that is free for all to attend.
