NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---
Despite a penalty kick goal from Chloe McDaniel in the 66th minute, the Cal State Northridge (0-3) lost 4-1 at No. 22 USC Friday afternoon in a non-conference contest at McAllister Field. McDaniel scored the Matadors' first goal of the season from the spot midway through the first half, but it was not to overcome a USC offense that led 3-0 through 50 minutes of action.
Meeting for the second time in as many years, the two teams were scoreless until the 26th minute of action. That's when USC's Katie Johnson collected a pass from Kayla Mills and sent a shot sailing past CSUN goalkeeper Jovani McCaskill.
The Women of Troy doubled their lead before halftime with a goal from Tanya Samarzich in the 30th minute of action. Elizabeth Eddy then made it 3-0 USC with a goal four minutes after halftime.
In the 66th minute, McDaniel successfully converted a penalty kick. The goal was the third of her career. However, USC would score the final goal of the game, as Mills scored in the 75th minute of action.
For the game, CSUN finished with 11 shots to 15 for the Women of Troy. McCaskill, making the first start of her CSUN career, had four saves. USC had 15 shots and its goalkeeper, Caroline Stanley, had four saves as well. The teams combined for 22 fouls in the contest.
CSUN returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 1 with a 12:30 p.m. contest at San Diego. The contest will feature live stats and video available at GoMatadors.com. On Friday, Sept. 6, CSUN plays Houston in their 2013 home opener. Kick off between the Matadors and Cougars is slated for approximately 7:30 p.m.
