NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---
Cal State Northridge women's soccer senior Melissa Fernandez was named the Big West Conference's Offensive Player of the Week for her performances against Pacific and UC Davis, the league office announced Monday. In a pair of CSUN victories over the Tigers and Aggies, Fernandez totaled three goals and produced the game-winning strike in both contests.
Originally from Granada Hills, Calif., Fernandez was an offensive force in both victories. Against the Tigers, she produced two goals in the first 20 minutes of action. Her goal in the 16th minute eventually stood as the game-winning goal.
Two days later, Fernandez scored the match's only goal as CSUN defeated UC Davis 1-0 on Senior Day. For the season, Fernandez leads the Matadors in goals (6), assists (5) and points (17). She ranks among the Big West Conference leaders in all three categories.
This is the first time Fernandez has claimed a Big West weekly award. She earned All-Big West Second Team honors in 2011 and All-Big West Honorable Mention in 2010. She is second Matador in 2012 to earn Offensive Player of the Week honors, joining fellow senior Stephanie Galarze.
For her Matador career, Fernandez has amassed 11 goals, 15 assists and 37 points. She ranks second in school history in career assists, tied for seventh in career goals and sixth in career points. Ferhandez has also rattled off over 150 shots in her career, setting a new school record.
Fernandez and the Matadors return to action on Friday, Oct. 26 with a road contest at UC Irvine. Kick off is slated for 7 p.m. from Anteater Stadium.
