NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---
Cal State Northridge senior goalkeeper Cynthia Jacobo has been named the Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season, the league office announced Monday. In two matches last week, Jacobo helped lead the Matadors to a draw at nationally ranked Portland and then recorded her 21st career shutout in the squad's league-opening victory over Hawai'i.
Jacobo continued her stellar play last week as the Matadors rebounded from a pair of tough losses the week before to Santa Clara and San Diego. In only their third road match of the season, Jacobo made three saves over 110 minutes of action as Northridge earned a draw against the nationally ranked Pilots.
Two days later, she made three stops again, this time posting her fifth shutout of the season as Northridge toppled Hawai'i 2-0 in both teams' Big West opener.
Jacobo continues to anchor a stout Northridge defense that has surrendered just seven goals through its first 11 matches. For the season, Jacobo is 4-3-4 with a 0.58 goals-against-average, 67 saves and a .905 save percentage.
Jacobo has amassed 26 wins and 21 shutouts in her career, the second-most totals in school history. The 21 clean sheets rank among the top 10 in Big West Conference history.
This is the third time in 2012 that Jacobo has earned Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors. She was the 2011 Big West Goalkeeper of the Year and an All-Big West First Team selection.
Jacobo is also one of the 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award, a recognition that is believed to be the first in school history. If she qualifies for the final 10 candidates, part of the selection process will include the public vote.
Jacobo and CSUN return to action Friday, October 5 with a home game against Cal State Fullerton. The Matadors and Titans kick off at 7 p.m. from Matador Soccer Field.
