The Cal State Northridge women's soccer team (1-5-1) lost 1-0 to Dayton (6-1) Sunday afternoon in the championship match of the Boilermaker Challenge on the campus of Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind. The Flyers' Colleen Williams scored her sixth goal of the season in the 11th minute to help lead Dayton past Northridge.
In a rugged, neutral-site affair, the teams combined for 19 fouls and six yellow cards in 90 minutes of action. The Northridge bench saw the yellow card twice and the Flyers' sideline also was cautioned. On the field, the Matador's Wendy Warner and a pair of Flyers were booked in the of action.
Williams scored the game's only goal in the 11th minute, lifting a blast from just inside 18 yards. Alysha Mallon earned an assist on the play. In net, CSUN's Cynthia Jacobo finished with three saves in defeat while Katherin Boone also had three stops in posting a clean sheet.
On offense, Heidi Farran led Northridge with six shots. Alexis Barbara, Jessa Yukihiro and Amanda Smith all had a shot for the Matadors as well. Dayton finished with 13 shots and had five corner kicks to Northridge's three.
Following the match, Farran, Katie Russ and Shannon Ward were all named to the all-tournament team as CSUN finished second in the four-team event. Farran recorded her third goal of the season in Friday's tie with Purdue while she and Ward both scored in the exhibition shootout victory over the Boilermakers following the tie.
Northridge has a while to rest until its next contest, not returning to the field until Friday, Sept. 23 in a road game at LMU. Kick off between the Matadors and Lions is slated for 4 p.m.
