Matadors Finish Alone in Fifth-Place at Circling Raven Invitational

WORLEY, Idaho - Despite a final round 312 on Tuesday, Cal State Northridge posted a top-five finish in its first tournament of the season at the Circling Raven Collegiate Invitational at Circling Raven G.C.

The Matadors, who were tied for fifth after two rounds of 307-310 on Monday, slipped to a final round 312 but remained along in fifth at the conclusion of Tuesday's final round.

"I don't think the girls thought we played one really good round in this tournament," said head coach Bonnie Murphy. "They will be the first to tell you they left several shots out there, but the conditions were tough.

"The course played hard but this tournament was there for the taking," added Murphy.

Senior Ellen Krausse was the low CSUN finisher as she her first top-20 finish this season and second of her Matador career. Krausse, who began the day tied for 22nd, moved up into a tie for 16th at (+15) 231 following a final round 76. She finished the tournament with rounds of 77-78-76.

Junior Margo Dionisio, who was in striking distance of the lead after two rounds, struggled to a final round 83 and finished tied for 24th at (+17) 233. Dionisio opened with rounds of 74-76 and sat tied for sixth at six over-par 150 on Monday.

Senior Kendall Patten was arguably CSUN's most consisent golfer as she posted rounds of 79-79-80 to finish tied for 52nd-place at (+22) 238. Fellow senior Kylie Kimura was a shot behind Patten at (+23) 239 after posting rounds of 77-85-77 which was good for a tie for 59th.

Freshman Sharon Shin, who birdied the first hole of her collegiate career on Monday, tied with Kimura for 59th after posting rounds of 83-77-79.

The Matadors' team score of 929 (307-310-312) left them just 16 shots behind team champion Washington State (913). San Francisco (922) and Portland State (922) tied for second with Samford University (923) fourth in the 20-team field.

Cal State Northridge next plays the first of two tournaments hosted by Cal Poly as the Matadors compete at the Firsestone Grill Intercollegiate at Monarch Dunes G.C. (Oct. 2-3). Northridge comes into the tournament as the two-time defending champions.
