Defense Keys CSUN to 62-56 Overtime Win at Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. --- The Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (11-9, 6-2 Big West) defeated Cal State Fullerton 62-56 in overtime Wednesday night in a Big West Conference match-up at Titan Gym. Jasmine Erving led the Matadors with 14 points and 12 rebounds and Jessica Duarte hit two key 3-pointers as Northridge defeated Fullerton for the sixth time in seven meetings.

Despite turning the ball over a season-high 30 times, Northridge was able to pull out the victory largely due to its defense and rebounding. The Matadors held the Titans to 17-of-56 shooting (30.4 percent) from the field and 4-of-16 (25 percent) from 3-point range.

In the battle of the boards, CSUN dominated the glass and out-rebounded Cal State Fullerton 47-23 for the game. CSUN had 12 offensive rebounds and Fullerton finished the game with just 14 defensive rebounds. In addition to Erving's game-high 12 rebounds, Janae Sharpe and Violet Alama each had seven rebounds.

Her first 3-pointer helped send CSUN to overtime and her second trey came with the shot clock winding down and put CSUN up four with 22 seconds left in overtime.

Both Ashlee Guay and Sharpe finished with 10 points for CSUN in the win. Sharpe had three steals and four assists to add to her seven rebounds. Guay posted four rebounds and four assists while playing all 45 minutes of action.

Randi Friess had a solid game for CSUN. She finished with four points, five rebounds and a season-high two blocked shots, including one on Megan Richardson with the game winding down. Jianni Jackson hit a season-high six free throws and added two rebounds and an assist off the bench.
