SACRAMENTO, Calif. - All seven Cal State Northridge men's cross country runners posted personal-bests while the women's squad finished 19th Friday afternoon at the Sacramento State Inter-Regional Jamboree.
Jackson Higgins clocked a team-best 26:47 to place 88th. Julio Mora was 91st in 27:08, Martin Santillan was 92nd in 27:12, Kamal Chahal was 93rd in 27:18, Marcelo Rosales was 95th in 27:28 while Luis Chavez ran 27:35 and Dylan Haerle ran 28:23.
"I don't know the last time we had six guys in the 27's but with a young group that's a great step forward for us," said head coach Avery Anderson.
On the women's side, Alexis Pichardo ran the 5k course in 19:09 which left her in 109th place. Nicole Rietveld posted an identical time (19:09) to finish 110th, Megan Magdaleno was 114th in 19:18, Victoria Olaiz was 126th in 20:15, Annie Weiss was 127th in 20:17 and Rachel Duriez (20:26) and Kristen Tapia (21:29) rounded out the Matador runners.
"We went in a little banged up on the women's side," said Anderson. "We just got Rachel back from being sidelined for a month with an injury and I thought she ran well early on but then a lack of race sharpness kicked in on the third mile.
"Overall we know were not exactly where we want to be but we are definitely moving in the right direction," added Anderson. "This meet was tougher than last week, the best of the west was here and we needed to see where the bar was set. We're responding to the challenge to continue to get better and step up."
