Big West Decathlon/Heptathlon Championships set for May 7-8 at Cal State Northridge

Northridge, Calif. - The first phase of the 2010 Big West Track & Field Men's and Women's Championships get underway on Friday and Saturday (May 7-8) when the decathlon and heptathlon events are held at Matador Track at Cal State Northridge. Admission is free both days.

Friday, May 7

Noon - 100 meters
The 100 meters will be followed throughout the day with the long jump, shot put, high jump and 400 meters.

12:30 p.m. - 100 meter hurdles The 100 meter hurdles will be followed by the high jump, shot put and 200 meters.

Saturday, May 8

11:00 a.m. - 110 meter hurdles
The 110 meter hurdles will be followed by the discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 meters.

1:00 p.m. - long jump The long jump will be followed by the javelin and 800 meters.

Four student-athletes from Cal State Northridge will be among 14 decathletes competing. They are Lance Gonzales, Owen Morse, Robert Robinson and Michael Woodham. Gonzales is the conference leader with 7,170 points set at the recent Northridge Multi's. Gonzales placed fourth at the Big West meet last year with 6,592 points. Robinson, who finished third last year at the league meet with 6,830 points, has posted a mark of 6,890 points this year at the Texas Relays.

Look for Cal Poly's Corbin Duer to be one of the conference favorites. Duer finished second last year at the Big West meet with 7,135 points.

Three student-athletes from Cal State Northridge will be among 15 competitors in the heptathlon. They are Desirae Gonder, Barbara Nwabe and Shelese Ruffin. Ruffin and Nwaba finished second and third, respectively, last year with 5,023 and 5,000 points. At the recent Mt. SAC Relays, Nwaba chalked up 5,212 points. Gonder tallied 5,183 points at the recent Texas Relays.

Anikia Jackson of UC Davis and Sara Klein of Cal Poly are two favorites in the meet. Jackson and Klein finished fourth and fifth, respectively, at last year's meet.

The first place winner receives ten team points, followed by eight points for second place, six points for third place, five points for fourth place, four points for fifth place, three points for sixth place, two points for seventh place, and one point for eighth place.

The main portion of the Big West Championships will take place May 14-15 at Cal State Northridge. The Matador women have won the league crown four straight seasons, while the CSUN men have captured the league title three of the last five years.

The Big West Conference decathlon record is 8,007 set by Mauricio Bardales of UC Irvine in 1978 ... The decathlon meet record is 7,631 set by Pete Mansur of Fresno State in 1984 ... The Big West Conference heptathlon meet record is 5,642 set by Sharon Day of Cal Poly in 2008 ... The conference record is held by Sheila Tarr of UNLV with 5,856 points set in 1984.
