NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge Matadors (2-12-2) fell short in their comeback-bid Wednesday night at Matador Soccer Field, as the UCLA Bruins (11-4-1) hung on to a 2-1 victory despite a barrage of shot attempts by Northridge throughout the second half.
The Bruins would strike first in the opening minutes of the contest with two goals inside of the 14th minute mark. Down 2-0 early, the Matadors did not seem fazed with the deficit, as they put together a series of quality shot attempts throughout the remainder of the first half.
Northridge earned two shots on goal following the second score by the Bruins, which were off the feet of Gustavo Villalobos and Jeremy Hohn. Sam Ball and Thomas Ramos each just missed a shots on goal with two wide attempts off transition plays.
The Matadors did finally break through just minutes before halftime, as Hohn would score off a strong corner kick by freshman Chris Smith that crossed just in front of the goal. On the play, Smith's kick attempt forced UCLA goalkeeper Brian Howe to come forward to break up the play. Howe punched the ball out, but unfortunately for the Bruin goalie, the ball went straight to Hohn, who quickly struck with a perfect shot that found the back of the net.
The goal not only cut the Bruin lead in half right before halftime, but more significantly, Hohn registered his first collegiate goal.
Once the second half begun, the Matadors continued to apply pressure on the Bruins that forced UCLA into turnovers and several Northridge scoring opportunities.
In total, the Matadors had a 9-4 advantage in shot on goal attempts and a 22-10 disparity in total shots. In the second period, CSUN outshot their counterparts 13-2.
Despite the numbers being entirely on the side of Northridge offensively, UCLA would still hold on for the victory by the slim margin of 2-1.
In the match, Smith started his first game of his young Matador career and he earned his first assist as well on the score in the first half.
The Matadors will return to Big West Conference action this Saturday at Matador Field when they take on the UC Riverside Highlanders. Kick-off is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start time.
