Matadors Drop 2-1 Decision to #8 UC Irvine
Oct. 20, 2010
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge Matadors men's soccer team (2-10-2, 1-4-1 BWC) dropped a tough 2-1 decision to the #8 ranked UC Irvine Anteaters (11-1-2, 4-0-1 BWC) Wednesday night at Matador Soccer Field, as the visitors rallied to score two second half goals.
Both teams jockeyed for position for the first 30-plus minutes of the first half with neither team willing to give an inch. Each squad posted multiple shots on goal, with CSUN tallying two, and UCI earning three.
In the 31st minute however, it would Northridge who would break through first. Freshman Alberto Rosas received a perfect pass deep into the box off a corner kick from Rafael Garcia. Rosas promptly headed in a quick shot past Irvine goalkeeper Andrew Fontein, giving Northridge the early 1-0 advantage.
The assist was the fifth of the season for the junior midfielder, a team-high mark.
The Matador lead would hold up for the remainder of the period, as UC Irvine could not find the back of the net against stingy CSUN defense. In the half, Michael Abalos would save four shots en route to his eight total saves for the match.
The Anteaters finally came away with their first goal in the 60th minute, squaring the match at 1-1 in similar fashion as the Matadors scored in the first period. Off a corner kick, Corey Attaway headed in the equalizing goal just out of the reach of Abalos.
In the 72nd minute, Rafael Garcia nearly put CSUN ahead by delivering a shot off the crossbar to the right of the goal off a free kick. Garcia then earned a shot on goal just six minutes later that was saved by Fontein keeping the game at 1-1.
UC Irvine would take advantage of near score by coming away with a goal in the 82nd minute by Amani Walker that proved to be the difference.
In a game that was aggressively played on both sides, CSUN finished with 21 fouls while UCI was only whistled for five; their first foul of the match came in the 71st minute when Garcia was fouled just outside the Irvine penalty area.
The Matadors will be back in action this Saturday when they travel to Santa Barbara to face the Gauchos in their only match-up of the season. Kick-off for Saturday's game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
