NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
In addition to turning in productive seasons on the field Cal State Northridge's Brian Behrad and Yarden Azulay were named to the 2013 NSCAA Men's Scholar All-West Region Teams, the organization announced Monday. Behrad, a senior forward, was named to the First Team while Azulay, a junior midfielder, earned a spot on the Second Team.
The National Soccer Coaches Association of America puts out its annual list of regional scholars at the end of the NCAA Tournament, with the Scholar All-America Teams announced shortly thereafter. To qualify for the Scholar All-Region Team, a player must be in his junior season and carry a minimum 3.30 GPA in addition to making significant contributions to his team during the season.
Behrad, a Woodland Hills, Calif., native, appeared in all 23 matches for the Matadors in 2013 and seven goals, four assists and 18 points. He recorded at least three points in a match three times, helping CSUN to wins over Albany, Saint Mary's and Cal Poly in the process. Behrad scored four game-winning goals in his final year for the Matadors and had both goals in the win over Saint Mary's, including a header with six seconds remaining in overtime to seal the victory.
His goal against Cal Poly in the Big West Tournament First Round proved to be the difference in the match and he added an assist for good measure as the Matadors topped the Mustangs in the playoffs for the second year in a row. Cal State Northridge went 8-0-0 this year when Behrad recorded at least one point. He currently has a 3.32 GPA and is majoring in Kinesiology.
Azulay added two goals and four assists for CSUN in 22 matches this year. He had a goal and an assist as the Matadors rallied from behind to defeat Memphis and claim the championship of the Ryan Rossi Memorial Tournament in September. Azulay also found the back of the net against UCLA and had assists against Central Arkansas, Bradley and Sacramento State.
With one playing year ahead of him, Azulay has already collected six goals, seven assists and 19 points. The Jordan Valley, Israel, native currently has a 3.68 GPA and is majoring in Marketing.
