NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
Midfielder Rafael Garcia was selected by the LA Galaxy with the 19th pick of the second round (38th overall) in the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft on Tuesday.
"I am extremely excited to have been chosen by the LA Galaxy in the supplemental draft today," Garcia said. "I want to thank them for the opportunity and I am looking forward to working extremely hard to earn a spot on the roster."
Garcia becomes the fourth former Matador with connections to the Galaxy, joining past defender Ben Benditson, defender and 2008 MLS Rookie of the Year Sean Franklin, and decorated goalkeeper Kevin Guppy, who has been training with the club as a member of the league's Reserve Goalkeeper Pool.
"We are very proud of Rafa and wish him the best," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "It is a great accomplishment for him and we know that he will be very successful in his professional career."
Garcia, originally from Canoga Park, Calif., is a midfielder that played in a defensive role during last week's Player Combine in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
During his career at Cal State Northridge, Garcia appeared in 68 matches (64 starts) and scored six goals while adding nine assists for 21 points. He served as the team's primary kick taker, as well as a co-captain, and earned his first career First Team All-Big West Conference selection as a senior.
"I want to thank God for this huge blessing because without Him none of this would be possible," Garcia added. "Lastly, I want to thank my family and everyone in the CSUN men's soccer program, especially Coach Davila and Coach [Yossi] Raz for always standing by me."
The Galaxy begin their season with a preseason tournament match against the New England Revolution on February 22 as part of the FC Tucson Desert Diamond Cup at Kino Stadium in Tucson, Ariz.
