Northridge Golf Sweeps Big West Golfer of the Month Awards for October

Oct. 29, 2010

Senior Nick Delio and junior Kylie Kimura were named Big West Conference men's and women's Golfer of the Month for October as announced by the conference office Friday, Oct. 29.

This is the first accolades of the season for Matador golfers in 2010-11. Delio also earned Big West Golfer of the Month honors in October of 2009. This is the Matador women's first Golfer of the Month award since Ashlee Nagamine earned the award in Novermber of 2009.

Delio posted a pair of top-10 finishes in two tournaments in October, including an individual championship at Cal State Northridge's Bill Cullum Invitational (Oct. 25-26). Delio's first place finish at the Bill Cullum Invitational was his best career finish in the tournament, he was second in 2009, and fourth individual win of his career. Delio opened the month with a sixth-place finish at the Santa Clara Cabo Collegiate (Oct. 2-4). For the month, the senior from Valencia, Calif., averaged 70.33 strokes over six rounds, which included three rounds in the 60's.

"I'm really happy for Nick," said head coach Jim Bracken. "He had a great month so this is a well deserved honor. We hope there are more top finishes to come for Nick in the spring."

Kimura opened her month by winning the Cal Poly Firestone Grill Invitational (Oct. 4-5) at Monarch Dunes G.C. with a three-round score of (+8) 221. Her best round of the tournament came in the opening round as she fired a (+1) 72 which helped propel the Matadors to their second consecutive Firestone Grill team title. The junior from Covina, Calif., then finished eighth in a solid field at New Mexico State's Price's "Give `Em Five" Invitational (Oct. 11-13). Kimura recorded her second straight top-20 finish as she placed 18th with a three-round (+6) 222.

"I'm extremely proud of Kylie," said head coach Bonnie Murphy. "She's so deserving of this honor. After sitting out all of last season, she was really eager to got out and compete this year and all of her hard work this summer has really paid off."

The Matador women will play one final fall tournament as they look to defend their title at the Lamkin Grip/Cal Poly Invitational at Cypress Ridge G.C. in Arroyo Grande (Nov. 1-2). The men's team is done for the fall but Delio will be competing at the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic Nov. 22-23 El Paso Country Club.
