Matadors Remain Sixth at Conclusion of Santa Clara Cabo Collegiate

Oct. 4, 2010

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico - Needing a blistering final round to pull into contention, the Cal State Northridge men's golf team posted a score of 288 to finish sixth at the Santa Clara Cabo Collegiate at Querencia G.C. Sophomore Chris Russo was the top Matador finisher with a fifth-place showing.

Russo finished just two shots off the lead as the sophomore from Westlake, Calif. carded a final round two under-par 70 to finish the tournament at three under-par 213. Russo's fifth place finish is his best as Matador and the second top-10 finish of his career after finishing eighth at the 2010 Big West Championship.

Senior Nick Delio, who was tied with Russo for third after two rounds, posted a final round one under-par 71 to finish sixth at two under-par 214. Delio's sixth-place finish is his best of the season after finishing 20th at the season-opening Palouse Cougar Collegiate Sept. 13-14. Delio now has 17 career top-10 finishes.

After an opening round 81 on Saturday, freshman Jake Katz completed his first collegiate tournament tied for 26th at (+7) 223. Katz rebounded from his opening round to post a two under-par 70 on Sunday and an even-par 72 on Monday.

Junior Matt Siporin also bounced back from a tough opening round to post a final round 76 on Monday. Siporin finished 61st at (+23) 239 with rounds of 88-75-76. Fellow junior Arthur Chung rounded out the Matador squad with a 65th-place finish at (+27) 243 after rounds of 85-83-75.

As a team, the Matadors matched their low score of the season with a second round 285 but could not move up from sixth, finishing with a three round score of 885. Arkansas took home the team title with a score of 854, easily defeating second place Houston (876) and third place Oregon State (877). SMU (878) was fourth and UC Irvine (880) was fifth in the 12-team field.

Arkansas' Jamie Marshall won individual medalist honors by one shot over a trio of players. Marshall finished at five under-par 211 while teammate Austin Cook, UC Irvine's Jerry He and SMU's Kelly Kraft finished at (+4) 212.

Cal State Northridge will be off until the Matadors host their annual Bill Cullum Invitational Oct. 25-26 at Wood Rancg G.C. in Simi Valley.
