Final Round 285 Moves Matadors Up to Fourth, Delio Falls One Stroke Short of His Second Title of 2010-11

April 10, 2011

TEMPE, Ariz. - Senior Nick Delio carded a final round 70 to finish one shot out of medalist position but it helped propel the Cal State Northridge golf team to a fourth-place finish at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational at the ASU Karsten Course.

The Matadors fired a final round 285 which matched the season-low 285 the team carded at the season-opening Palouse Cougar Collegiate at Washington State. CSUN finished with a three-round 863 in Arizona, whis is seven shots better than the team's previous low for any tournament this season.

Individually, San Diego State's J.J. Spaun repeated as ASU Thunderbird individual champion as he overcame a two-stroke deficit to catch Delio in Sunday's final round. Delio carried a one-shot lead over USC's Steve Lim following two rounds on Sunday but Spaun chipped in on the 18th to birdie the hole and claim the championship. Spaun's final round (-4) 67 was good for a one-shot win over Delio who finshed Sunday with a (-1) 70.

Delio, who was bidding for his second win this season, instead settled for his team-leading fifth top-10 finish. He finished with rounds of 72-65-70 to finish at (-6) 207. Spaun finished with rounds of 70-69-67 to finish at (-7) 206.

Matt Sipron had his best tournament of the season as he finished sixth after a final round even-par 71. Siporin wound up with rounds of 69-70-71 to finish at (-3) 210. The sixth-place finish was his second top-10 finish of the spring after finishing third at the Del Walker Intercollegiate Mar. 7-8. Siporin's final score of 210 is two shots better than the 212 he shot at the Del Walker.

Chris Russo had his best round of the tournament on Sunday although he remained in 49th place. Russo finished with a (+2) 73 on Sunday to go with rounds of 74-75 on Saturday, the sophomore finished at (+9) 222. Jake Katz tied for 67th at (+16) 229 after posting rounds of 82-76 on Saturday and a solid final round of even-par 71.

Satch Herrmann slipped from a tie for 72nd to 75th following a disappointing (+13) 84 in the final round. Herrmann wound up with rounds of 77-81-84 to finish at (+29) 242. Arthur Chung competed individually and tied for 67th at (+16) 229 following rounds of 78-75-76.
