Sauer Finishes Second, Matadors Move up to Fourth at Anteater Invitational

COSTA MESA, Calif. - Senior Kyler Sauer made a run at his first collegiate title but ultimately came in second by two strokes while the Cal State Northridge moved up to fourth at the conclusion of the Anteater Invitational Tuesday at Mesa Verde Country Club.

Sauer, who has two career top-10 finishes, opened the day in third place, three shots behind Long Beach State's Kevin Lee after rounds of 69-72 on Monday. Sauer's final round of even-par 71 tied Lee but UC Irvine's Pete Fernandez, who was second through two rounds, matched Sauer's final round 71 to win individual medalist honors.

Sauer wound up the tournament at one-uder 212 following rounds of 69-72-71 while Fernandez finished at three-under 210 (67-72-71). Sauer's tournament score of 212 matches the low for a Matador player in 2013-14 as the senior also finished at 212 to take eighth at the Cullum Invitational in October.

"Even though I did leave some strokes out on the course I'm really happy with the way I played this week," said Sauer. "It's my best finish thus far and I think it's a great way to start off the year."

As a team, CSUN moved up from fifth to fourth following a final round 292. The Matadors led the tournament after an opening round 287 but a second round 300 dropped them down the leaderboard.

Michael O'Connor, who opened the day tied for 17th, remained there following a final round three-over 74. The top-20 finish is the first for O'Connor in three tournaments as a Matador. O'Connor completed the tournament with rounds of 72-76-74 to finish at nine-over 222, which is his CSUN low tournament score.

Oscar Sachs made it three Matadors in the top-20 as he finished tied for 20th at 10-over 223 following rounds of 73-75-75. Sachs' top-20 finish was also the first of his CSUN career and his score of 223 was eight shots better than his previous low.

Dodge Ward also made a run on Tuesday as he moved up from 34th to 31st following a final round one-over 72. Ward posted scores of 78-77-72 to finish at 14-over 227. Aden Louez, competing as an individual, was three shots back of Ward in a tie for 32nd at 17-over 230 following rounds of 77-78-75 and Ryan Green finished tied for 37th at 18-over 231 following rounds of 73-77-82.

Cal State Northridge returns to tournament play Feb. 10-11 as the Matadors travel to St. George, Utah to compete in the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational hosted by Southern Utah at Sunbrook G.C.
