Matadors Finish in a Tie for Ninth at Big West Championship

SAN JACINTO, Calif. - Cal State Northridge concluded the 2012-13 men's golf season with a final round 318 as the Matadors finished in a tie for ninth-place at the Big West Championship Tuesday at The Country Club at Soboba Springs.

The Matadors, who were eighth after an opening round 304, slipped to ninth following a second round 309 and then were caught by Cal Poly after a final round 318. The two teams each finished with a tournament score of 928.

Individually, Kyler Sauer stayed in contention until the final three holes on the front nine. The junior from Thousand Oaks opened the final round tied for fourth and was at two-under for the final round following an eagle three on the par-five sixth hole. But a triple bogey on the seventh and a double on the ninth sent him to the back nine three-over, ending any hope of CSUN's first Big West individual championship.

Sauer, who winds up his first season as a Matador with a team-low 75.47 stroke average, finished his first conference championship in a tie for eighth place at five-over 221 with scores of 72-73-76.

Senior Matt Siporin looked to finish his CSUN career with a solid tournament and had it going through two rounds with scores of 72-74 which left him tied for seventh. But a final round 83 dropped him into a tie for 25th at (+13) 229. After leading the Matadors with 10 birdies over the first two rounds, Siporin did not have a single birdie on Tuesday but did finish with an eagle three on the 18th and final hole.

Also for CSUN, Oscar Sachs finished 44th at (+22) 238 following rounds of 79-79-80, Ryan Green finished 47th at (+25) 241 after carding rounds of 81-81-79 and Steven Molumby was 49th at (+31) 247 following rounds of 82-80-85.

Cal State Fullerton and Pacific finished 54 holes tied at 887, three shots better than third-place UC Davis (890). Pacific then won the team title in a one-hole playoff to earn the automatic berth into the NCAA Regionals.
