Final Round 298 Drops Matadors to Eighth-Place at Big West Championship

LA QUINTA, Calif. - Cal State Northridge concluded the 2011-12 season with an eighth-place finish at the Big West Men's Golf Championship Tuesday at the La Quinta Mountain Course.

The Matadors, who posted team rounds of 301 on Sunday and 296 on Monday, split the difference on Tuesday carding a final round 298 to finish the three-day championship at 895. Northridge was in seventh after two rounds but was overtaken by Cal Poly (894) by three strokes on Tuesday as the Mustangs claimed seventh-place by one shot.

"This was just one of those seasons," said head coach Jim Bracken. "We played well at times and we struggled at times but we got some guys some tournament experience and hopefully this season will help us as we look to next year."

UC Davis won its second consecutive team championship as the Aggies (858) held off a spirited final round by Long Beach State. The 49ers carded a team round of 282 on Tuesday and finished just one shot behind Davis at 859. Cal State Fullerton (861) was third, Pacific (863) fourth, UC Santa Barbara (867) fifth, UC Irvine (868) sixth and UC Riverside (909) finished ninth.

Matador junior Chris Russo posted his second straight top-10 finish at the conference championship despite a final round three-over 75. Russo, who was fourth after two rounds, was one-under through 15 holes on Tuesday but a quadruple-bogey on the par-3 16th hole doomed any hopes he had at challening for the individual title. Russo wound up tied for ninth-place at one-under 215 for the chamnpionship. He was Northridge's low scorer in seven of eight spring tournaments and 10 times during the 2011-12 season.

Playing in his first Big West Championship, sophomore Ryan Green had a solid 26th-place showing. Green posted a final round three-over 75 to match his opening round score. That combined with a second round two-over 73 left the sophomore from Henderson, Nev., at seven-over 223 for the championship. After competing in just four tournaments during his freshman season, Green competed in all 12 tournaments and 35 rounds for the Matadors this season compiling a 77.7 stroke average.

Senior Jason Rosenkranz posted the Matadors' low score on Tuesday with a final round three-under 69. Rosenkranz, who birdied the first four holes on the back nine, finished in a tie for 31st-place at nine-over 225 (81-75-69) to cap his Northridge career. The senior from Westlake, Calif. finished tied for 28th in his only other Big West Championship appearance in 2009.

Freshman Steven Molumby, also competing in his first conference championship, struggled to a final round 80 after posting rounds of 76-77 over the first two rounds of  the tournament. Molumby competed in every tournament for the Matadors this season and capped his inaugural season with a 41st-place finish at (+17) 233 on Tuesday.

Shane Blanchard, who re-joined the Matador golf program for the spring season, wound up 45th following a final round seven-over 79. Blanchard, who played for the Matadors in 2008-09 and 2009-10, finished his first conference championship at (+30) 246 following rounds of 87-80-79.
