Matadors Can't Improve on 14th-Place at North Ranch Intercollegiate

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge men's golf team carded a team tournament-best 305 in the final round but could not move up from 14th place at the conclusion of the North Ranch Invitational hosted by Pepperdine at North Ranch Country Club on Tuesday.

Despite a solid final round 69 from junior Chris Russo, the Matadors finished last among the 14 teams competing. Northridge wound up with rounds of 315-326-305 for a tournament total of 946, by far their highest stroke total of the 2011-12 season. The Matadors came in averaging 301.5 strokes per round as a team.

"You can tell by the scores that the conditions were difficult," said head coach Jim Bracken. "It was cold but that's no excuse, we just didn't play well and the guys did not execute and made a ton of mental errors. We'll put this one behind us and work hard to get better before Fresno State."

Russo, who began the day tied for 47th-place, fired a one under-par 69 on Tuesday to jump 19 places into a tie for 28th. The junior from nearby Thousand Oaks, improved his total each round ultimately posting rounds of 80-77-69 to finish at (+16) 226.

Senior Jason Rosenkranz matched his best score of the tournament on Tuesday as he carded a (+5) 76. Rosenkranz also posted a 76 in Monday's first round around a second round 84 to finish tied for 52nd at (+26) 236.

The remainder of the squad finished at the lower end of the leaderboard as Ryan Green was tied for 66th, Steven Molumby was 70th and Shane Blanchard was 71st. Green posted rounds of 79-85-80 to finish at (+34) 244, Molumby finished with scores of 82-83-80 for a three-round (+35) 245 and Blanchard finished with rounds of 80-82-85 for a total of (+37) 247.

San Diego State (864) took home the team title by five shots over San Diego (869) while New Mexico (873) was third followed by Pacific (899) and BYU (903). Matt Hoffenberg of the Aztecs claimed individial medalist honors with a two over-par 212 whie edged teammate Alex Kang by two strokes.

Cal State Northridge returns to competition Mar. 5-6 as the Matadors travel to Fresno to play in the Lexus Golf Classic at Fort Washington C.C.
