CSUN Men’s Basketball Hosts Cal State Los Angeles in Exhibition Contest

Northridge, Calif. - A new era, a new enthusiasm. Welcome to CSUN basketball in 2013-14.

Reggie Theus enters his first season as the head coach of the Matador basketball program. Theus is only the fifth coach in the 55-year history of Matador basketball.

Theus inherits a team that will be led by Stephan Hicks, Josh Greene and Stephen Maxwell. Hicks led the team in scoring (15.7 ppg) and was among the league's top rebounders at seven boards per game. Greene was second on the team in scoring last year (14.5 ppg). Maxwell averaged career-bests in scoring (14.6 ppg) and rebounds (8.3 rpg) last year. Green and Maxwell each gained Honorable Mention accolades by the Big West Conference last year.

Tickets for the game cost $5 and are good for both the men's game and the earlier exhibition game between the Matador women's team and Cal State San Marcos. CSUN students received free admission with their school ID.

Look for a solid effort from sophomore point-guard Landon Drew, who earned quality playing time last year in averaging nearly four assists per game.

Tonight's opponent, Cal State Los Angeles, has been picked to finish sixth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in a preseason poll released by the conference.

Last year, the Golden Eagles featured one of the nation's top defenses. CSLA led the NCAA Division II in field goal percentage defense after limiting opponents to just 36 percent shooting.

Cal State Los Angeles was 16-11 last year, 13-9 in conference play and qualified for the CCAA championship tournament for a fourth straight season.

The Golden Eagles have five key returnees, including senior forward James Tillman, who was a first team all-CCAA player last year after leading the team in scoring (14.2 ppg) along with 5.1 rebounds per contest.

Two former CSUN players are now on the Cal State Los Angeles team, Jordan Mitchell and Davon Potts.

Cal State Northridge officially begins the 2013-14 season on Nov. 8 against Hope International. Game time is 7:00 pm.
