Fifty-One Teams, One Program

With the start of the baseball season less than a month away, things are heating up for the Matadors on the diamond beginning this weekend as the program will host its inaugural Alumni Barbecue and Reunion.

The festivities are scheduled to take place this Saturday, January 31st, starting at 1:00 p.m.

Matador ballplayers from all years are encouraged to bring their family and friends to the event as they will be able to meet this year's squad, share stories and memories with one another, and participate in a home-run-derby.

Participants in the contest will be divided into three different teams - 1979 & before, 1980-89, and 1990-2008 - with fences set up pertaining to each respective group to encourage a fair and competitive contest.

Afterward, all alumni and their loved ones will be able to sit, relax, and eat in a picnic-style set-up before hearing head coach Steve Rousey share his thoughts on the team, the program, and the upcoming season.

Catching The Eyes Of Others As Well

Fastballs, curveballs, and breaking balls are not the only thing that senior catcher John Parham has collected during pre-season workouts. Yahoo/, one of the nation's most well-respected sources for all news and notes pertaining to collegiate athletics, has named Parham to their All-Big West Conference Preseason team.

The 2008 All-Big West Honorable Mention recipient has steadily increased his numbers at the plate in each of the last three seasons, as he set career-high marks during the 2008 campaign with his .348 batting average, 72 hits, six home runs, and 32 runs batted in. also named right-handed pitchers Chris DeBoo (San Diego, CA/Otay Ranch HS), Bryan Longpre (La Crescenta, CA/Grossmont JC), Ryan McCarney (Acton, CA/College of the Canyons), left-handed pitcher Steve Messner (Apple Valley, CA/Apple Valley Christian) and right-handed pitcher/outfielder Westley Wright (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark HS) as players that are new to the team and possess the potential to positively impact the team throughout the 2009 season.

The inaugural game of the 2009 season will take place on Friday, February 20 at 2:00 p.m. as the Matadors travel to Malibu to face the one of the top teams in the West Coast Conference, #23-ranked Pepperdine Waves. These two teams will square-off the following day in CSUN's home-opener of the 2009 season. That game is scheduled to take place at Matador Field, with the first-pitch taking place at 1:00 p.m.
