Three Pitches Are The Difference in Matador's 9-0 Defeat

April 24, 2009

Box Score

Three pitches turned out to be the difference in Friday afternoon's game between the Cal State Northridge Matadors (17-23, 4-9) and UC Riverside Highlanders (22-13, 3-7) as CSUN Was defeated 9-0 thanks to three home runs that would constitute almost all of the Highlander offense.

Both teams will return to Matador Field Saturday afternoon in the second game of a weekend series with Matador starter Justen Gorski (1-2, 4.01) will square off against Matt Andriese (3-2, 3.60).

Spirit Saturday will also take place at Matador Field on April 25th as all students in CSUN apparel will receive a vouched for a free hot dog. The number of vouchers are limited and must be picked up before the second inning of play.

Even though the Matadors were held scoreless, a number of players were able to spray the outfield with a number of well-hit shots to reach base. Unfortunately for Northridge, they were unable to string together enough hits to break through on the scoreboard during the game.

Leading the way for CSUN was third baseman Justin DeMarco who finished the game batting 2-for-3, recording his sixth double of the season in the eighth inning. DeMarco also made a number of solid plays at the hot corner, including a diving play into the dirt to rob Highlander designated hitter Michael Hur of a surefire hit down the left-field line in the seventh inning.

Riverside opened up the scoring in the third inning when the leadoff-hitter, Trevor Hairgrove hit a solo shot into right-centerfield. His teammates, left-fielder Michael Nesbitt and pinch-hitter Tony Nix would also hit home runs of their own in the fifth and ninth innings respectively to minimize the chance of another Matador come-from-behind opportunity of reaching fruition.
