Box Score

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Richard Cates and Chris Hannick drive in runs for the Matadors, but Cal State Northridge (8-6) fell victim to unearned runs and dropped a 6-3 decision to Southern Miss (8-6) Friday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park.

The Matadors posted runs in both the third and fourth to take an early two-run advantage, but it was erased in the sixth when an error proved costly for Northridge.

In the third, it was TS Reed scoring after knocking a leadoff single. The run went unearned, however, when a Ryan Pineda single skipped under the glove of leffielder Drew Carson, advancing Reed to third. Cates brought Reed in on a ground out later in the inning.

In the fourth, a leadoff single from Jowen-James Murray-Thornton was cashed in on a single later in the frame.

In the sixth, the Golden Eagles went a long way towards the four-run advantage that ultimately sent Northridge packing. Phil Hann had Northirdge out of the inning, inducing a ground ball with two outs and men on second and third. The bouncer to Ryan Pinerda was fielded cleanly at third, but the throw was awry, and two Golden Eagles came around. A home run later, and the Golden Eagles held a 4-2 lead. A pair of runs in the seventh pushed the Eagles out in front 6-2.

Northridge went down quietly in the eighth and ninth, and USM held on for the 6-2 win.

The Matadors will look to rebound Saturday afternoon when they hook up with Liberty, a team they beat 11-7 on Saturday afternoon.
