NCAA Notes ...
The women's volleyball season has ended for Cal State Northridge, and now it is time for head coach Jeff Stork to turn his expertise from coaching into predicting the national champion ... The Matadors played six teams that were nationally-ranked this year, including sixth-ranked Washington, #10 UCLA, #16 San Diego, #17 Cal Poly, and #24 Duke, and Stork has seen several of the elite teams on television to accurately gage who has the best chance to win the NCAA crown ... According to Stork, picking a winner is difficult because of so many factors (injuries, scouting reports, matchups, etc) ... So Stork has decided to make one prediction, teams he thinks will compete in the NCAA Final Four on Dec. 13-15 in Sacramento ... Stork thinks top-seed Stanford, #2 Nebraska, #4 Texas and #6 Washington will be the teams to have the best chance to capture the prestigious national title ... Nebraska defeated Stanford last year to win the national title ... Two years ago, Washington upset the Cornhuskers ... Two Big West teams made the 64-team tournament ... Cal Poly is seeded 16th, while Long Beach State is unseeded.

Matador Minute ...
The Cal State Northridge men's basketball game vs Duquesne in the opening round of the Drake Tournament on Friday night in Des Moines should be interesting ... The game features two of the top three scoring teams in the nation ... Duquesne is averaging 95.2 points per game, second-best in the nation, while the Matadors are averaging 95.0 ppg, third-best in the country ... The Matadors are 3-0 and off to their best start since the 1983-84 season when they won their first four games ... Congratulations to Sam Farber, the play-by-play broadcaster for baseball, women's basketball and women's volleyball at Cal State Northridge ... Farber is a co-winner of the 2008 Chick Hearn Memorial Scholarship ... Farber, in addition to his broadcast duties at CSUN, is a graduate student working toward an M.A. degree in broadcast journalism at the USC Annenberg School for Communication ... The annual scholarship is funded by an endowment established by the Los Angeles Lakers in memory of Hall of Fame sports broadcaster Chick Hearn, who passed away in 2002 ... Farber, who earned a bachelor's degree in journalism with a minor in mathematics from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., was presented with the scholarship during halftime of last Sunday's NBA game between the Lakers and the New Jersey Nets ... One of the great names in Matador basketball history, Andre Chevalier (1990-94), is the new boys' dean and girl's basketball coach at Oaks Christian School in Westlake Village, Ca. ... For the last seven years, Chevalier has been the boy's dean at Cleveland High School in Reseda where he organized a school-wide mentoring initiative, Village Nation, that has spun off into a national program ... Chevalier set school records for career scoring, assists and steals records during his outstanding career at CSUN ... Chevalier was also an assistant coach at Cal State Northridge from 1998-2000 ... Chevalier played for Matador head coach Bobby Braswell when Braswell was the head coach during the 1980's at Cleveland High School.
