Northridge Notables ...
Peter Bomar, a senior goalkeeper on the Matador soccer team, definitely has a busy schedule with his academics and athletic endeavors at Cal State Northridge ... Bomar also has the added responsibility of being a caretaker for what he says is a 130-year-old tortoise named Torty ... Bomar inherited the tortoise from his brother's wife's grandmother ... Torty has lived in the Reseda area since the 1920's ... Bomar doesn't mind the responsibility for being a trusted caretalker for such an old animal which quietly lives in the back yard of his home in Chatsworth ... Needless to say, to live such a long life is quite an accomplishment ... No doubt living a good, healthy life with a daily dose of fresh greens, vegetables and strawberries, free of stress and maintaining a positive attitude, have been keys to success for Torty ... In case you're wondering, the oldest tortoise ever recorded, was Tui Malila, who was presented to the Tongan royal family by British explorer Captain Cook shortly after its birth in 1777 ... Tui Malila remained in the care of the Tongan royal family until its death by natural causes in 1965 ... Tui Malia was 188 years old ... However, the zoo director in Calcutta, India, claims it has documentation of a turtle named Adwaitya that was born in 1750, and died in 2006 at the zoo at the age of 255.
