The Week Ahead ...
Men's golf and women's volleyball highlight the home activities for Cal State Northridge this week, and a final farewell to a fallen Matador soccer player ... Bob Vazquez, Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations, offers his weekly insight on the teams and student-athletes who compete for Cal State Northridge ... The weekly report includes upcoming key games, a look at the accomplishments of the student-athletes and coaches at Cal State Northridge, and a report on what other activities are happening in the Matador Athletic Department.
Soccer Story ...
A final farewell was given to the late Matador soccer player Jay Singh before a huge crowd at last Saturday's men's soccer game between Cal State Northridge and UC Riverside ... Not only did Matador fans and the community pay tribute to Singh, but the entire Matador teams from men's basketball, women's golf, women's soccer, swimming and water polo, and a large contingent of student-athletes from the other Matador teams attended the game to honor Singh ... The CSUN baseball team interupted their practice nearby to lineup along the outer fence of Matador Soccer Field to honor Singh ... A colorful display of flowers, letters, and posters in support of Singh and his family greeted fans and friends at the entrance of Matador Field ... Before the start of the game, the soccer team met in private on the field with the immediate family of Singh ... The team then escorted the Singh family to the display of flowers at the front entrance ... The UC Riverside team also extended their respects with a large bouquet of flowers ... The Matador team then escorted the Singh family to their reserved seats where the large crowd honored the Singh family with a respectful round of applause ... Just before the start of the game, head coach Terry Davila spoke to the crowd, praising Singh for his hard work and dedication ... As a final gesture, a moment of silence was observed ... There was not a dry eye in the place ... The Cal State Northridge and Loyola Marymount soccer teams were among the gathering of family and friends at Singh's funeral in San Bruno last Wednesday ... Singh passed away of unkown causes on Oct. 7 at his home in northern California ... Singh, who was 20, was a redshirt midfielder from Loyola Marymount where he played two seasons for the Lions ... Singh was an inspirational leader to his teammates ... The night before his passing, Singh phoned (from northern California) his teammate, Bo Miller, to find out how all the details of the team's game at Cal State Fullerton ... Said Miller, "Jay just called to find out how we did, who scored. He was already real close with the guys here. He never had trouble fitting in anywhere. Everyone who met him just loved him." ... The Matador women's soccer teams also honored Singh with a moment of silence before their game last Sunday against Long Beach State ... CSUN had been scheduled to play UCSB last Wednesday, but because of Singh's passing, the game has been rescheduled for Nov. 14, at 1:00 p.m.
Golf Gossip ...
Looking to get some fresh air and warm sunshine ... Then head to the Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley on Monday (Oct. 15) and Tuesday (Oct. 16) where Cal State Northridge is hosting the annual Bill Cullum Invitational ... The tournament features 21 teams including Pac-10 power Arizona State, defending champion Loyola Marymount and CSUN ... The price is right ... Admission is FREE!!!
Volleyball Volumes ...
Matador assistant women's volleyball coach Kiran Mistry has lined up another all-star cast of honorary coaches for this weekend's matches at The Matadome ... On Friday (Oct. 19, 7:00 p.m.) at The Matadome against Cal Poly, Terry Piper, the Vice-President for Student Affairs, will be asked to lend his coaching expertise to insure a victory over the league favorite Mustangs ... The following night at 7 p.m., Bob Barker, the University Controller, will be pacing the sidelines along with head coach Jeff Stork and his staff to post a victory over the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos ... On Nov. 1, University President Dr. Jolene Koester will huddle with the coaching staff and team in their pursuit of victory over Cal State Bakersfield.
Northridge Notable ...
Alex Johnson, a freshman outside hitter, has made sizable contributions to the Matador women's volleyball team this year ... Johnson, who is among the team leaders in kills, says her favorite actor is Brad Pitt, and her favorite actress is Sigourney Weaver ... Her favorite TV show is "Desperate Housewives" and her favorite movie is "Gladiator" ... Johnson is a huge fan of the legendary rock band Led Zeppelin ... Johnson could, no doubt, tell you that the original Led Zeppelin band included Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham, and that the band has sold more than 300 million albums worldwide, including nearly 110 million sales in the United States ... Her musical taste also includes the music of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Matador Minute ...
It's never to early to take a look at the spring sports at Cal State Northridge ... The 2008 baseball schedule is out for inspection, and it includes several top home games including a four-game series against eastern power St. John's (March 7-8-9) ... The home slate also includes Pac-10 power UCLA (April 15, 3:00 p.m.) ... The home season opener is Feb. 22-24 with a three-game set against Northwestern of the Big 10 ... The Matadors biggest road trip of the season includes a four-game set at the Southern Mississippi Classic in Hattiesburg, Mississippi (Mar. 14-16) ... How does one get from Northridge to Hattiesburg? ... According to Tom Hutchinson (Director or Baseball Operations), the team will fly from Los Angeles to New Orleans, and then travel by bus on a 90 minute journey from New Orleans to Hattiesburg ... Positioned at the fork of the Leaf and Bouie Rivers, Hattiesburg, Mississippi, is centrally located less than 100 miles from the state capital of Jackson as well as the Gulf Coast, New Orleans and Mobile, Alabama ... Population is 50,000 ... The men's volleyball team had the distinction of being the highest nationally-ranked Matador team last year at #8 ... The Matadors will be much improved this year and their home slate in 2008 includes matches against NCAA champion UC Irvine (Feb. 20), and two teams expected to be ranked as co-favorites to win the national title in 2008, UCLA (Feb. 22) and Pepprdine (Mar. 12) ... The Matador coaching staff definitely has an international flair ... Three CSUN coaches hail from Canada ... James Blake, the newly arrived men's basketball coach, hails from Victoria, British Columbia, where he played collegiately at Brandon College and at the University of Victoria; Kiran Mistry, who is in his fifth season as an assistant women's volleyball coach, is a native of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and graduated from the University of Lethbridge; and head swim coach Barry Schreifels was born in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada although he migrated south to earn his degree at Western Washington University in Bellingham ... The newest addition to the Matador women's basketball coaching staff is assistant Cory O'Dell, who arrives from Chaminade University in Hawaii ... O'Dell was the head coach of Chaminade's first-ever women's basketball team in 2006-07, and also served as a men's assistant coach for three years in addition to coaching duties at Alaska Anchorage ... Two of the top players on last year's Matador's men's and women's basketball teams are playing professional basketball in Germany ... Ofa Tulikihihifo (2003-07), the all-time leading scorer in CSUN women's basketball history, is playing for BG-74 in Gottingen, while Thomas Shewmake (2003-07), the school's all- time leading shot blocker, is playing for the Provelo Merlins in Crailsheim.
Did You Know ...
Don Strametz has the longest tenure of any of the 15 head coaches in the Cal State Northridge athletic department ... Strametz, the Director of Track & Field/Cross Country, arrived on the Northridge campus in 1979 as men's cross country coach (starting salary $80 per month).
