Holmes and Tulikihihifo Named Student-Athletes of March
Cal State Northridge track and field high jumper Jerrick Holmes and women's basketball's Ofa Tulikihihifo have been named Student-Athletes of the Month for March as named by the Student-Athlete Advisory Council.
Holmes, a sophomore, jumped a Matador record and personal-best 7-3.75 (2.27m) to win the men's high jump and become Cal State Northridge's first NCAA champion at the Division I level at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. on March 15.
Tulikihihifo capped off a wonderful freshman season when she was named Big West Conference Freshman of the Year. She was also honored on the All-Conference First Team. Tulikihihifo led the Matadors in points and rebounds this season.
Doug English, men's volleyball: English leads the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in digs and set the Cal State Northridge single-season record in that category with the 264th he picked up against UCLA last Wednesday.
Laura Sauao, track and field: Sauao finished ninth in the weight throw with a mark of 63-4 (19.30m) at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The junior won the weight throw event at the MPSF Indoor Championships.
Tereza Simonyan, women's tennis: Simonyan was unbeatable in the No. 1 spot for the Matadors, going 10-1 and winning 12 matches in a row at one point this season. She is 16-4 on the season in her singles matches.
Erica Bonetti, women's water polo: Bonetti is the leading scorer for the Matadors with 36 goals. In addition, the freshman is third on the squad in steals in helping the water polo team to a 17-4 record this season.
Emilee Moores, softball: Moores was named Big West Player of the Week for her performances against UC Santa Barbara last weekend. The freshman hit .326 for the month and is third on the Matadors in hitting and fourth in the Big West Conference.
