RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Junior Lilyana Morejon finished third in the women's 5k race as the Cal State Northridge women finished seventh while the men were eighth on Saturday at the Big West Cross Country Championships at the UCR Course.
The Matador women tallied 189 points and a total time of 1:52:45.60. Northridge's seven women posted an average time of 22:33.12. UC Santa Barbara claimed the women's title as the Gauchos amassed 50 points for the championship, besting second place UC Davis by 11 points. Cal Poly was third with 74 tallies, while Long Beach State rounded out the top four with 100 points. Fifth place went to host UC Riverside with 112 points, sixth belonged to Cal State Fulleron with 153 points, while UC Irvine (204) and Pacific (288) completed the scoring on the women's end.
On the men's side, Cal Poly took home the title as the Mustang men tallied 28 points. UC Santa Barbara finished in second with 67 points, while UC Davis rounded out the top three with 81 tallies. Host UCR was fourth with 86 points, Long Beach State ended up in fifth with 117 points, while UC Irvine was sixth with 143 points. Cal State Fullerton (182) and the Matadors (249) wrapped up the scoring in the men's 8K race.
Morejon's third place was the highest by a Matadors since Liz Camy's third place finish in 2005. Morejon ran 20:36.3 to finish just behind UC Davis' Sarah Sumpter (20:34.0) and Cal Poly's Kayleigh Tyerman (20:35.4). Zitalic Ley finished 38th in 22:13.0, Nanci Velarde was 45th in 22:39.7, Mallory Day was 59th in 23:18.8, Sandra Velarde was 66th in 23:57.8, Ana Rosales was 67th in 24:24.1, Marissa Crook was 69th in 24:33.2 and Ariana Gomez was 71st in 25:39.7.
In the men's 8k, the Matadors were eighth with 249 points. Northridge ran an average time of 27:49.82. Juan Olea was the top Matador finisher as he placed 42nd in a time of 25:42.7. A trio of Northridge runners finished in a bunch as Gustavo Hernandez was 64th (28:03.3), Steven Gonzales was 65th (28:09.8) and Juan Hernandez was 66th (28:34.4. Hunter Hays (68th, 28:38.9), Danny Garcia (69th, 29:20.1) and Masis Hagobian (70th, 29:25.3) rounded out the Matador scoring.
Cal Poly's Joe Gatel won the men's overall title with a Big West and course record time of 23:36.8. Julian deRubira of UC Santa Barbara was close behind Gatel with a time of 23:40.3 for second place, while Evan Anderson of Cal Poly was third in 23:41.6.
