IRVINE, Calif. - Sophomore Lilyana Morejon finished a Northridge-Best 11th as the Matador women placed 12th and Diego Fernandez's 37th-place finish paced the men who also finished 12th at the Asics/UCI Invitational.
Morejon's time of 18:20.60 was nearly four minutes better than the time (22:14) she ran on the same course in 2007.
"Lilyana made the commitment this summer to be prepared for the cross country season and it paid off," said head coach Don Strametz. "She's not even close to tapping her potential."
Also for the Matador women, Nanci Velarde was 90th (20:09.20), Sharon Wilkinson was 91st (20:11.50), Sandra Velarde was 104th (20:24.80), Marissa Crook was 133rd (21:35.10), Julie Brandin was 142nd (22:23.50) and Leslie Ching finished 148th (22:37.00).
As a team, Northridge finished 12th in the 14-team field with 321 points and an average time of 20:08.24.
For the men, Fernandez led the team with a 37th-place finish in a time of 26:41.30. Juan Olea was 82nd (27:59.90), Tawei Ma was 125th (30:20.50), Marvin Gonzales was 126th (30:31.30), Eddie Garcia was 130th (31:28.00) and Masis Hagobian was 133rd (31:57.20).
"I'm pleased with how the men ran in the first meet of the season," said Strametz. "We had so many new guys that were running their first Division I race. We're also hoping to add some new runners for our next meet on Sept. 27."
