NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Having finished the 2009 season as Big West Conference champions, head coach Marcelo Leonardi looks to continue the program's level of success as five of his recruits have officially committed to compete as members of the Cal State Northridge Women's Water Polo team.
Danielle Dalton, Melissa "Missy" Doll, Lindsy Nelson, Carson Nestler, and Chelsea Yox comprise the incoming recruiting class will begin competing next season.
"All of these student-athletes bring with them the skills and talent to contribute and excel at the collegiate level. I am excited to see how each of these players will develop throughout their careers," stated Leonardi.
A right-handed attacker from Los Osos High School, and a member of the Foothill Water Polo Club, Dalton brings with her a high level of athleticism and speed to Matador Pool.
Leonardi is thrilled with her potential as a Matador as "she will provide an immediate spark to our program due to her outside shooting and dynamic playing ability."
Known across the conference for their suffocating play on defense, Doll, a two-time High School All-American and Pennsylvania State Player-of-the-Year is one of two goalies in this class that look to further enhance CSUN's stellar reputation between the pipes.
Currently competing for the water polo team at Souderton High School, Doll was also named to the 2008-09 Northeast Zone team and Junior National Training Team as part of the Olympic Development program in addition to her successes earned as a High School All-American in the 50 and 100 Freestyle events as a member of her school's swim team.
"Doll has very quick reactions for this position, skills that have helped her craft a successful high school career."
Having earned various accolades during her time as a left-handed utility player for the water polo team at Murray High School (Murray, Utah), Leonardi is excited about Nelson's "athleticism, speed, and versatility that can help add another dimension to the Matador offense."
Going into her senior season, Nelson has already been named a two-time high school All-State Selection, earned Utah 4A State MVP Honors, and was a member of the 2008-09 Mountain Zone Team as part of the Olympic Development program.
Currently competing for both the water polo team at Los Gatos High School and the San Jose Water Polo Club, Nestler is "a defensive-minded player that has great vision for the game and possesses the necessary play-making abilities."
A two-time All-CCS selection, two-time All-League selection, 2009 Los Gatos High School Junior Athlete of the Year, and member of the Pacific Zone team as part of the Olympic Development Program, Nestler has the potential to make a positive and immediate impact for Leonardi once she arrives on campus.
Another decorated recruit who will look to become the next stellar Matador netminder is Yox. A two-time All-Del Rio League selection as a goalie for La Serna High School, she also competes as a member of the award-winning El Rancho Water Polo Club.
Leonardi was impressed by her performances in the pool and recruited her due to her "strong fundamentals and very good understanding of the game as a goalie. Her club experience and natural ability are a potent combination that will provide additional depth at that position."
