The 2010 Cal State Northridge Women's Water Polo Post-Season Report

Northridge, Calif. - It was quite simply the greatest year in the sport of women's water polo at Cal State Northridge.

Expectations were high at the start of the year, and nearly all the goals were met - a school record 28 wins (28-8), a first place showing in the Big West Conference regular season (4-1), and a national ranking of ninth, the highest ranking in school history.

Rankings Review
Cal State Northridge ended the year ranked 13th in the nation by the College Water Polo Association ... The Matadors were ranked as high as ninth nationally earlier in the year, their highest ranking ever ... For seven weeks during the 2010 campaign, CSUN was ranked tenth in the nation ... Other Big West schools ranked in the national Top-20 besides #13 Cal State Northridge were UC Irvine (9th), Pacific (14th), UC Santa Barbara (15th) and UC Davis (19th).

Record Review
Two team school records and two individual school records were broken during the 2010 season ... The Matadors scored 371 goals, easily breaking the old school record of 311 set in 2008 ... CSUN also collected 347 assists, breaking the old school record of 296 set in 2009 ... Jillian Stapf ended her four-year Matador career with a school record 1,305 saves ... Whitney Delgado's 80 goals broke the old school record of 74 set by Chari Christopher in 2005.

Conference Clips
Cal State Northridge had the #1 defense in the Big West Conference ... The Matadors gave up only 6.47 goals per game ... CSUN's offense was also at the top of the conference list at 10.31 gpg ... Jillian Stapf ranked #1 in the league in giving up goals per game ... Stapf allowed only 6.64 goals per game ... Stapf's 10.22 saves per game were third-best in the BWC behind UOP's Brooke Millar at 10.45 spg and UCSB's Ruth Milne at 10.39 spg ... Three CSUN players were among the top five scorers in the Big West Conference ... Sophomore Whitney Delgado had a school record 80 goals, tied with Jasmine Myles of Pacific for first place ... Alison Pierce was fifth with 46 goals while Sydney Sonoda had 43 goals, seventh-best in the league.

Career Chatter
Four Cal State Northridge players ended the 2010 season ranked in the school record Top 10 for career goals ... Sophomore Whitney Delgado (2009-) is fifth all-time in scoring with 115 goals ... Just ahead of Delgado are school record holder Allison Brookes (2005-08) with 222, Chari Christopher (2003-05) with 177, Jessica Coy (2006-09) with 162 and Erica Bonetti (2003-06) with 131 ... Junior Chelsea Curran (2007-) has 91 career goals to rank in eighth place while Sydney Sonoda (2008-) is in ninth place with 90 and senior Kirra Kylander (2007-10) ended her career with 88 goals, good for tenth place ... Senior Kristin McLaughlin (2007-10) ended her four-year CSUN career ranked in the school record book Top-10 in career steals (196, #2) and career assists (129, #4) ... Kirra Kylander (2007-10) ended her career third all-time in career assists (150) and ninth all-time in steals (89) ... Senior Renee Gargiulo (2007-10) finished seventh all-time in career steals (126) and sixth all-time in career assists (101) ... Senior All-American Jillian Stapf is the career saves school record holder with 1,305 in her four-year career ... Stapf's 283 saves this year is fifth all-time in school year.

Fast Facts
Ten CSUN players scored at least 15 goals this year ... Cal State Northridge was quick to grab the lead in games ... In the first period alone, the Matadors outscored the opposition (104-to-61), and enjoyed a 100-to-49 goal margin in the second period.

Honors Hoopla
Jillian Stapf capped off an outstanding career at Cal State Northridge with her selection as an Honorable Mention All-American by the Association of College Water Polo Coaches (ACPWC) and the 2010 Big West Women's Water Polo Player of the Year ... Stapf, a senior goalkeeper, led the Big West in goals against average (6.64) and ranked third in saves per game (10.21) ... Stapf also helped the Matadors yield a conference-low 6.47 goals per contest to opposing teams ... Whitney Delgado and Sydney Sonoda, in additon to gaining first team All-Big West honors, were named Honorable Mention All-Americans by the ACWPC ... Delgado, a sophomore, tied for the league leader in goals with a school record 80 ... Sonoda tallied 43 goals, seventh-best in the Big West ... Kristin McLaughlin and Alison Pierce gained Honorable Mention All-League status.

Academic Accolades
Ten players were named to the All-Academic team by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) and to the All-Big West Academic squad ... The members included Renee Gargiulo, Jessica Goforth, Alyssa Goldie, Kirra Kylander, Kristin McLaughlin, Kathryn Outzen, Heidi Pettinger, Alison Pierce, Bethany Scamara and Jillian Stapf ... Seniors Kylander, McLaughlin and Stapf each gained All-American Academic honors three times by the ACWPC and also were three-time All-Academic Big West and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) choices ... Gargiulo and Pierce each gained All-American status by the ACPWC twice.

Northridge Notes
The Matadors played five (Loyola Marymount, Marist, Pomona-Pitzer, UCLA, USC) of the eight teams that competed in the 2010 NCAA Final Four ... Head coach Marcelo Leonardi was recently named a United States Junior National Coach and awarded the top Olympic Development Program Coach of the Year.

Tallied 17 goals ... Scored at least one goal in ten games with a career-high three goals in games against Pomona-Pitzer (3/6/10), Penn State-Behrend (3/7/10) and Occidental (3/11/10).

Danielle Berman, Defender, RS Freshman, Irvine, Ca.
Scored five goals along with six steals ... Named the "2010 Outstanding Female Athlete" by CSUN's National Center on Deafness ... Berman is only one of three deaf student-athletes to compete at Cal State Northridge.

Nicole Concialdi, Goalkeeper, Junior, Chino Hills, Ca.
Tallied a career-high 84 saves ... Had ten or more saves in four games including a career-high 15 saves against Pomona-Pitzer (3/6/10), 13 against Chapman (4/11/10), 12 against Penn State-Behrend (3/7/10) and eleven against Fresno Pacific (1/30/10) ... Has 127 career saves in three seasons at Cal State Northridge, fourth-best in school history ... Allowed only 5.60 goals per game ... Ranked fifth in the league stats in saves per game at 9.60.
